金玉其外，败絮其中 

      明朝的时候，杭州有个卖水果的人，很会储藏柑橘。他保存的柑橘经过一个冬天和一个夏天都不会腐烂，柑橘皮又红又滋润，饱含着水分，像宝石一样，非常美丽。柑橘的价格虽然很高，买的人却不少。

  有一次，明朝大臣刘基买了他一个柑橘，剥开皮却臭气冲天，再看里面的果瓤，早就干得像破棉絮了。刘基气愤地责问道：“你为什么弄虚作假欺骗顾客？”

  卖柑橘的人笑了笑，说：“我做这个生意已经很多年了，而且就靠这个过日子。我愿意卖，人家愿意买，谁都没意见，只有你这位先生不满意。你可知道，当今世上欺骗人的多着呢！你不想想，那些腰间佩着兵符好像是保卫国家的武将，难道真有孙子、吴起的打仗本领吗？那些头戴乌纱帽、神气十足的人，难道真是治国的人才吗？其实他们也没多大本领。人民的疾苦，他们根本就不管；官吏们胡作非为，他们也不制止。他们只顾自己吃饱了肚子，耗费国家的粮食和钱财，却不知道羞耻。这些人和我卖的柑橘一样，看起来非常光鲜亮丽，但是肚子里什么能耐都没有。”

  刘基听了这番话，哑口无言。回到家里后，他就写了《卖柑者言》这篇文章，其中就有“金玉其外，败絮其中”一句。

后来，人们用“金玉其外，败絮其中”作为成语，比喻外表虽然很华丽，可是里面却已经一团糟了。

They only eat their own food and spend the country's food and money, but they do not know shame. These guys, like the citrus I sell, look beautiful, but they don't have anything in their stomachs. "

When Liu Ji heard this, he was speechless. After returning home, he wrote an article entitled "The Man of the Citrus", which included the phrase "Gold and jade on the outside, rot and decay on the inside(Apple of Sodom)".

Later, people used the phrase "Gold and jade on the outside, rot and decay on the inside(Apple of Sodom)" as an idiom. Although the metaphor is very gorgeous, it is already a mess inside.

겉은 번지르르하고 속은 엉망이다

명나라 때 항주에 과일을 파는 사람이 있었는데 감귤을 아주 잘 저장하였다.그가 보존하고있는 감귤은 겨울과 여름을 지나도 부식되지 않는다. 감귤 껍질이 붉고 습윤하며 수분을 풍부히 함유하고있어 보석처럼 매우 아름답다.비록 감귤의 가격은 매우 높지만 사는 사람이 적지 않다.

한번은 명조 대신인 유기가 감귤 한마리를 사왔는데 껍질을 벗기면 악취가 풍기였고 그속의 과육을 보면 벌써 솜가루처럼 말랐다.유기는"왜 거짓으로 고객을 속이느냐"며 분통을 터뜨렸다.

감귤을 파는 사람들은"이 장사 한지 여러 해 됐고, 그것만으로 먹고 산다.나는 팔고 싶고 다른 사람은 사려 하는데 아무도 의견이 없고 다만 당신만 불만을 가지고있습니다.너 정말 알잖아, 오늘날 세상에는 사람을 속이는 자들이 아주 많아!너는 그 허리에 병적을 차고 있는 것이 국가를 보위하는 무장 같으니, 설마 손자와 오기의 전쟁 능력이 있는 건 아니겠지?감투를 쓰고 활개를 치는 사람들이 과연 나라를 다스리는 인재란 말인가.사실 그들도 그리 능력이 있는 것은 아니다.인민의 질고는 전혀 관계하지 않으며관리들이 제멋대로 행동하는데도 그들은 제지하지 않는다.그들은 자기만 배불리 먹고 나라의 식량과 돈을 쓰면서도 부끄러운 줄 모른다.이들은 내가 파는 감귤처럼 반짝반짝 빛나고 아름다워 보였지만 뱃속에 아무런 재주도 없다"고 말했다.

유기는 이 말을 듣고 말문이 막혔다.집으로 돌아온 후, 그는'감귤을 파는 사람의 말'이라는 문장을 썼는데, 그 중에'겉은 번지르르하고 속은 엉망이다'라는 한 구석이 있다.

후에 사람들은 겉은 번지르르하고 속은 엉망진창이라는 것을 성어로 비유하였다.
