Home > Jobs and Internships > China Work Permit Points: How Much Does Chinese Proficiency Really Add?
- Education: up to 20 points for a doctorate, 15 for a master’s, 10 for a bachelor’s
- Relevant work experience: counted from two years upward, accumulating with length of service
- Age: the 26–45 bracket usually scores highest
- Chinese language ability: scored as a separate item
- Annual working time in China, work location, salary level and others
- Confirm which category you are aiming for. Qualifying for A and holding B for renewal are different preparations;
- Do not cram purely for points. HSK Levels 3 to 5 correspond to real ability, and exam tactics add nothing in a workplace;
- Combine employer training with your own development. Many companies will fund Chinese training, and it counts as in-service training records;
- Keep your certificate valid. HSK score reports are valid for two years, so check the expiry against the date you must submit documents.
A learner at a foreign-invested company recently asked us: my employer is applying for my China work permit, and I hear speaking Chinese earns points. How many, exactly?
1. The framework
Under the notice on fully implementing the work permit system for foreigners in China and the accompanying classification standards (trial), foreign nationals working in China fall into three categories:
| Category | Who it covers | Points threshold |
|---|---|---|
| A | High-end talent — scientists, technology leaders, international entrepreneurs | 85 points or above |
| B | Foreign professionals | 60 points or above, or a bachelor’s degree plus two years of relevant experience |
| C | Other foreign personnel | Meeting labour market needs, subject to national quotas |
Category A is exempt from age, education and work-experience limits, permits are generally issued for up to five years, and applications go through a fast track. Category B is where the great majority of professionals land.
2. What the points are made of
The points system covers several dimensions. The commonly scored items include:
3. What the language item is actually worth
In the points table published with the classification standards, the Chinese language item is valued roughly as follows (public trial version):
| Condition | Points |
|---|---|
| Former Chinese national | 5 |
| HSK Level 5 or above | 5 |
| HSK Level 4 | 4 |
| HSK Level 3 | 3 |
4. Why it is still worth the effort
A few points sounds modest. But the defining feature of a points system is that the margins are often very small.
Someone sitting at 58 or 59 points, stuck just below the Category B threshold; or a company that is one item short of the evidence needed for a Category A determination — in those situations, a few points from the language item, together with the right supporting documents, can occasionally be decisive.
And there is a more fundamental point: beyond the scoring system entirely, language ability determines your actual output in the role. A foreign employee who can deal directly with local teams, suppliers and government offices is not in the same league, in terms of irreplaceability, as a peer who works only in English.
5. Practical advice for professionals already in China
Mandarin Edu has provided in-service Chinese training to foreign-invested enterprises in Wuxi and the surrounding region for many years, with content tailored to the learner’s industry — shop-floor language in manufacturing, business negotiation, government liaison scenarios — scheduled around company HR processes.
