- Different register. Quoting, negotiating prices, contract terms, payment follow-up, meeting scheduling, business correspondence — these carry little weight in a general exam but form the core of BCT.
- Different evaluation logic. BCT scores by language task: can you follow a meeting arrangement, read a business letter, handle a phone exchange.
- Different audience. BCT explicitly names enterprise selection and placement among its uses, which HSK does not.
- Professionals already working in China who need Chinese to move real work forward;
- Staff about to be posted to China who must demonstrate language readiness to an employer;
- People in trade, procurement or supply chain whose daily counterparties are Chinese suppliers or clients;
- Employees whose company counts Chinese ability towards promotion or assignment decisions.
- Learn vocabulary along the deal chain. Quotation, negotiation, contract, delivery, after-sales — organising words this way beats alphabetical lists.
- Master business document conventions. Emails, letters and meeting minutes have fairly fixed openings and closings. Low effort, high return.
- Practise spoken negotiation. Business speech has to advance a position while leaving room: expressions like "in principle that works" or "let us evaluate it further" need dedicated drilling.
- Get comfortable with numbers and units. Amounts, quantities, delivery dates and percentages appear constantly, and mishearing one number is expensive.
Professionals working in China ask the same question repeatedly: I already hold an HSK certificate — do I also need BCT? The answer depends entirely on what you intend to do with the result.
What BCT is
The Business Chinese Test (BCT) is a standardised international Chinese proficiency exam. It focuses on the ability of non-native speakers to use Chinese in real business or general workplace situations, and evaluates the language tasks a candidate can actually carry out.
It is delivered as a series of three independent exams:
| Component | For whom | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| BCT (A) | Beginners in business Chinese | Everyday communication plus basic business tasks |
| BCT (B) | Intermediate to advanced learners | More complex business communication tasks |
| BCT (Speaking) | Candidates needing a spoken assessment | Oral communication in business settings |
The official statement of purpose lists three uses: a reference for enterprise recruitment and placement, a reference for teaching at schools and training institutions, and a basis for candidate self-assessment.
How it differs from HSK
HSK measures general Chinese ability across daily life, study and work, with a very broad topic range. BCT narrows the setting to business and the workplace, and asks a different question: can you get the job done?
Who should consider BCT
When HSK is still the right answer
If the goal is university admission, a scholarship application, or meeting an entry or graduation language requirement, HSK is the general-purpose credential and BCT does not replace it. If the goal is getting things done at work, BCT fits the setting far better. They are not substitutes; they serve different purposes.
