Classroom Chinese and counter Chinese are two different things. The first lets you think; the second expects you to be clear within three seconds. Below are the four situations foreign residents in China encounter most.

      Mobile payment

Daily spending in China runs heavily on mobile payment. The major wallet apps support linking foreign bank cards and completing real-name verification; the exact scope, limits and documents required follow each platform’s current guidance.

      • "Can I pay by scanning a code?"
      • "Should I scan you, or you scan me?"
      • "Could you help me with the code, please?"
      • "Do you take bank cards here?"
Note: first-time setup usually requires a passport and a local mobile number before full functionality is available. It is worth doing early after arrival.

      Getting around

Public transport and taxis are the easiest place to practise, because the sentence patterns are fixed and the feedback is immediate.

      Situation Phrase
Metro "Which line do I take to get to XX?"
Bus "Does this bus go to XX?"
Taxi "Please take me to number XX on XX Road."
Tickets "I would like one high-speed rail ticket to XX."

Rail and air tickets require valid identification. Foreign travellers normally buy with a passport and use staffed channels, so allow more time than domestic passengers do.

      Seeing a doctor

The standard hospital sequence is: registration — triage — consultation — payment — tests or pharmacy. Foreign residents are generally outside local basic medical insurance, so arrange commercial cover and keep every receipt.

      • "I would like to register for the XX department."
      • "I am allergic to XX."
      • "How many times a day should I take this medicine?"
      • "Does it need to be taken on an empty stomach?"
      • "Could you print my medical record and the invoice, please?"

      Banks and government offices

Opening an account generally requires a passport and a valid visa or residence permit, and some services also ask for a local mobile number and proof of address. Practice differs between branches and changes over time, so confirm the required documents by phone before you go.

      Making the language actually work

What these four situations share is short sentences, fast pace and low tolerance for error. Sentences learned in class but never once spoken at a real counter tend to fail on the spot — not because you do not know them, but because you have never said them out loud in that setting.

This is why we recommend training situational speech separately: payments, transport, healthcare and paperwork, each drilled until you can walk through the whole exchange unaided, including understanding the follow-up question. It is the highest-return segment of study there is.

Mandarin Edu runs short practical Chinese courses for foreign residents in China, using role play to reproduce real counter conversations and adding locally common expressions for each student’s city. Contact us for the current schedule.

【Sources】 Note: this is a compilation of situational language and process. Required documents and platform rules change, so always follow the current requirements of the receiving office, platform or counter.
